W wieku 12 lat za pieniądze otrzymane od dziadków Amy kupiła pierwsze CD "The Man Who" zespołu Travis. Była zachwycona. Znalazła w domu gitarę swojego taty i z pomocą internetu poznała chwyty gitarowe. Do tego dołączył młodzieńczy zapał do pisania i grania piosenek. I tak się zaczęła przygoda z muzyką. Później wraz z innymi młodymi muzykami grała w sobotnie wieczory w pubach – głównie akustyczne sety. Powstawały nowe utwory, zainspirowane twórczością Babyshambles (Pete Doherty), Travis, Red Hot Chili Peppers czy REM. Kolejnym etapem była wysyłka demo z ośmioma utworami do różnych firm fonograficznych. Zainteresowała się nią firma Melodramatic Records prowadzona przez Pete Wilkinsona. Z pomocą Peta oraz Boba Clearmountain powstała debiutancka płyta.
Długo oczekiwany album Amy MacDonald "This Is The Life" ukazał się w Polsce 9 listopada 2007 roku. Album zawiera 11 utworów, w tym pierwszy singiel z płyty "Mr Rock & Roll" – wielki sukces na Wyspach Brytyjskich, zarówno na listach przebojów jak i sprzedaży. Singiel a później album wzbiły się na drugie miejsce UK Chart i przez 5 tygodni utrzymywały się w TOP10.
